Harivansh Narayan Singh Re-Elected as Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha
Harivansh Narayan Singh has been re-elected as the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha for the third time, which is a historic achievement in Indian parliamentary history. What makes this even more significant is that he has become the first nominated Member of Parliament to hold this position. This development highlights the trust and confidence placed in his leadership by the members of the Upper House.
According to the Constitution of India, the Vice-President serves as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha under Article 64. The Deputy Chairman, on the other hand, is elected by the members of the Rajya Sabha from among themselves. His role becomes crucial in maintaining discipline, ensuring smooth functioning of the House, and conducting proceedings when the Chairman is absent. In case the Chairman’s position is vacant, the Deputy Chairman performs all duties of the Chairman.
