The origins of the Indian Navy trace back to 1612, when the East India Company established a naval force to protect trade routes. After India’s independence, the modern Indian Navy was formally established on 26 January 1950.

The headquarters of the Indian Navy is located at Naval Building, New Delhi, from where strategic and operational decisions are taken.
Motto of the Indian Navy
The official motto of the Indian Navy is “Sham No Varuna”, meaning “May the Lord of the Oceans be auspicious unto us.” The motto reflects strength, discipline, and maritime heritage.
Chief of Naval Staff
The current Chief of the Naval Staff is Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, who leads the Indian Navy and oversees its operational readiness.
