The North Atlantic Treaty Organization aka NATO was founded in 1949 by the USA, Canada, and several Western European nations to provide collective security against the Russia (Soviet Union then).

The USA entered into NATO and it was the first peacetime military alliance of USA outside of the Western-Hemisphere.

After Second World War, the European nations struggled to rebuild their economies and ensure their security.

In 1947–1948, a series of events caused the Western Europe to become concerned about their borders and political security and the United States to become more closely involved with European affairs.
