Tata Sierra Creates History: First Petrol SUV to Deliver 29.9 KMPL Mileage
Tata Motors has created a new milestone in the Indian automobile industry with the launch of the new Tata Sierra. The SUV has officially become the most fuel-efficient petrol SUV in India, delivering a record-breaking 29.9 kmpl mileage.
This achievement places Tata Sierra at the top of the mileage chart, beating the previous record holder Volkswagen Taigun, which delivered 29.8 kmpl. No other petrol car in India has achieved such high fuel efficiency so far.
Record Mileage Test at NATRAX, Indore
The mileage test of the Tata Sierra was conducted on 30 November 2025 at the NATRAX facility in Indore, one of India’s most advanced automotive testing tracks. The SUV was driven continuously for 12 hours, from 7 in the morning to 7 in the evening, covering a total distance of 800 kilometres. The test was carried out on a closed track with smooth road conditions, no traffic signals, and no potholes, ensuring optimal driving conditions. During the run, the average speed was maintained between 65 and 70 kmph to achieve the best RPM balance and fuel efficiency. Tata Motors clarified that this mileage was achieved under controlled conditions and may vary in real-world driving situations.
New 1.5-Litre Hyperion Turbo Petrol Engine
The Tata Sierra tested at NATRAX was powered by Tata’s latest 1.5-litre Hyperion TGDi turbo-petrol engine.
Engine Specifications:
Engine: 1.5L, 4-cylinder TGDi petrol
Maximum Power: 160 PS
Peak Torque: 255 Nm
Transmission: 6-speed automatic
The engine is designed to maintain stable fuel flow for longer durations, improving efficiency without compromising performance.
The test drive was handled by professional drivers from the Pixel Motion team, who ensured consistent driving throughout the 12-hour duration. Driver changes were done with minimal breaks to maintain continuity and efficiency. Careful throttle input and RPM management played a key role in extracting maximum mileage from the SUV. Along with exceptional fuel efficiency, the Tata Sierra also demonstrated strong performance, achieving a top speed of 222 kmph during the test run.
The Tata Sierra used for the test was powered by Tata’s newly developed 1.5-litre Hyperion TGDi turbo-petrol engine. This four-cylinder engine produces 160 PS of power and 255 Nm of torque and is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The engine features low-friction internal components and a wide torque band, allowing the fuel delivery to remain stable over long durations. This advanced engine technology helped the Sierra deliver both high performance and class-leading mileage.
Although the test vehicle reached a top speed of 222 kmph, Tata Motors has confirmed that the production version of the Sierra will have its top speed electronically limited to 190 kmph to ensure safety and long-term reliability. In addition to the turbo-petrol unit, the Tata Sierra will also be offered with other engine options, including naturally aspirated petrol, diesel, and a future electric version, making it a versatile offering in the SUV segment.
Positioned between the Tata Curvv and the Tata Harrier, the new Sierra fills an important gap in Tata Motors’ SUV lineup. It focuses on comfort, practicality, and efficiency while maintaining strong road presence and performance. Built on Tata’s advanced ARGOS architecture, the Sierra supports multiple powertrain options and reflects the brand’s long-term strategy for flexible and future-ready vehicles.
