India–Seychelles Joint Military Exercise ‘LAMITIYE-2026’

India and Seychelles are conducting the 11th edition of the joint military exercise “LAMITIYE-2026” at the Seychelles Defence Academy from 09 March to 20 March 2026. This bilateral training programme aims to strengthen defence cooperation and improve interoperability between the armed forces of the two nations.

The exercise involves personnel from multiple branches of the Indian armed forces, including the Indian Army’s Assam Regiment, along with participation from the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force. The Indian Navy’s warship INS Trikand and the C-130 transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force are also participating in the exercise, demonstrating India’s integrated tri-service operational capability.

The term “Lamitié” comes from the Creole language and means “friendship”, symbolising the strong diplomatic and military ties between India and Seychelles. This exercise has been conducted in Seychelles since 2001 and takes place every two years, making it an important platform for training, maritime security cooperation, and regional stability in the Indian Ocean region.

Nationwide Campaign: “Say No To Proxy Sarpanch”

The Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Government of India, launched a nationwide social media campaign titled “Say No To Proxy Sarpanch” to eliminate the practice known as the “Sarpanch Pati system.”

In many rural areas, although women are elected as village sarpanch under reservation provisions, the actual decision-making is often carried out by their husbands or male relatives. This practice undermines the purpose of women’s political empowerment.

The campaign was launched on 8 March 2026 (International Women’s Day) and will continue until 18 March 2026.

Objective of the Campaign

Panchayati Raj System – Constitutional Provisions

The Panchayati Raj system was given constitutional status through the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act, 1992, which came into effect on 24 April 1993. This amendment aimed to strengthen local self-governance in rural India.
